Civil Rights Room

I thought our field trip today was really interesting. I had never been to the Nashville library. In fact, I've hardly been to any libraries since the ones near my home were not so great. However, the Nashville library is amazing. It was nice to see such a beautiful public building, since in California not a lot of public funding gets put towards that.
As well, the Civil Rights room was awesome (and I mean that in the way that it causes awe). To see the photos on the walls of different parts in the movements was shocking, because I've never seen photos like that outside of books.
I had no idea the extent to which Nashville played in the Civil Rights movement. I thought that it was just like almost any other city in its role. It was refreshing to hear that students partook in the movement, and especially white students, and even teachers.
It was an amazing experience, and I look forward to going back!

  1. I agree sydney the Nashville Library was classy. I never really understood how much of a role Nashville played in the CIvil Rights movements. I really enjoyed the bar style seats with all the rules they needed to follow in order to properly sit in. It's amazing how disciplined they had to be, if someone was yelling in my face using offensive names and even burning a cigarette on my neck i'm not sure how much self control i could have. Great post syd keep up the great work !!!

  2. I had no idea that Nashville had that much to do with the movement until we took the trip to the library. And I agree, I dont know how much self control I would have either if I was put into that situation. I never knew that room was even in the library until we went there. It was definately a worth while experience.

  3. I loved seeing the pictures in that room and what Nashville used to be like! I have lived here most of my life and it is amazing to me how drastically it has changed just in my lifetime. And then to see it from 50 years ago, it feels like it was a totally different city!

  4. I didn't know about the limited funds towards public libraries in California, lame on their part. I had never been there either and I share the same appreciation for its beauty as you do. A library should be a place of escape where one can immerse themselves in what they want to learn, and that is definitely the perfect place to do just that. I have the utmost respect for all of the students who participated in the Civil Rigths Movement and although I wasn't alive in that time, I know that I would have participated in it.
